Indignity upon indignity. Little Satch now needs a spinal tap, and an ultrasound. The NEC (see below for that) seems to be on the mend, or may never have been there at all (maybe an excess of stool – we are wading in it), but his CRP (something reactive proteins, google it or wait till later if you really want to know…) are alarmingly high, so let’s make sure it’s not meningitis. Meningitis??? You’ve got to be kidding me. Okay, no-one really and truly thinks so, there are no other indicators, but let’s make sure.

There is a moment of levity I can share with you (it happened mostly in my brain). The surgeon came in this morning – bout half an hour ago. I hadn’t met this man yet (which put him in the minority among the doctors and nurses in the clink), but he was stern and bearded and serious looking, late fifties, just who you want to see as your infant son’s surgeon. Anyway, he does his exam, consults with the nurses, tells me some serious things. The air of gravitas surrounding him dissipates not an ounce. Until. He turns to walk out of the room and I see that the entire back of his labcoat is adorned with a giant yellow Big Bird. I’m talking huge, incandescent, and spectacular. Pinch me, I think, I must be dreaming (and it’s both a good dream and a bad dream, like sweet and salty, but here’s hoping for more of the sweet, in which category I will most certainly place giant yellow muppets painted on the backs of little surgeons).

[…] trepidation. In his corner will be the good Dr. H., who filled in so admirably for the now-retired Big Bird so many weeks ago, and whose boyish good looks and dapper style might give another parent pause if […]
