morning update

So we waited on pins and needles but then completely conked out and slept through all cell phones and alarms. I woke up around 5 and checked my phone, where a message was waiting that everything looked basically the same. Around 6 I stumbled over to the NICU and managed to catch the attending doctor, who sat me down and went over the 1am x-ray. Things are, in fact, already looking a good deal better for Satch. I think I’ll spare you the gory (literally) details, but the bottom line is that he seems to be stabilizing, and there’s no sign of perforation of the intestine (which is, as the doctor put it, “all we care about.” A perforation is the worst outcome of this disease, and from what I have gathered, it’s a catastrophe.)  Best case now is that Satch continues to improve, follows through on his 10 day course of antibiotics with no feeding, gets back on feeding and nursing thereafter, and joins his brothers at home in about two weeks. It will complicate life for us a bit – having him here that long – but that is absolutely the least of our worries at this moment. Just keep brightening, little man.

Thanks for the play by play–such a hopeful report to wake to! Re: complicate things a bit–that’s why you have all these helpers on call. Maybe the thing I have learned the quickest in parenting and being outnumbered (kids to adults) is to ASK for help. I’m really good at it in fact–so let me remind you: People love to help–it gives us purpose in a world that sometimes seem to lack in it… Helping you and Alex and the boys is a grand and welcome purpose. People will say no if they can’t, and jump to it if they can. so much love pouring your way, cat
