Just when I think I’m out…they pull me back in

Hi everyone. Satchel has had a setback and is back in the NICU. He has been diagnosed with necrotizing enterocolitis, which is somewhat common in preemies, and potentially very fast acting and very serious. It’s an inflammation and possible infection of the intestines, and can necessitate surgery. He’s getting IV antibiotics, has a new feeding tube to his stomach, and will have round the clock care and attention in the NICU, including x-rays every six hours. The most recent set of x-rays showed some improvement, so we are hopeful, but obviously very concerned. If Satch can avoid surgery his prognosis is excellent, and we should know that within the next 24 hours. I’ll try to keep the blog updated with any important news.
Dan

Hey everyone, thanks for the good thoughts – they mean a lot coming from close friends. Alex and I are feeling calmer now (c. midnight) than earlier this evening when we were pretty shaken up. Hopefully the next few hours bring nothing but goodness. I believe in fairies!!
