Graduation Day

Hi everyone.

I have great pics, but no energy left to find the camera or that little wire thingy I need to make the transfer. You think these cute photos grow on blogs? They don’t. I put them there. Look at my knees! (Okay, enough esoteric David Lynch references…I’m just really running on embers).

I wouldn’t sully the letter below with a non-substantive post if I didn’t have some truly special news to report. The boys, every one of them, are OUT of the NICU. It happened so fast we didn’t really know what hit us. Yesterday the doctor mentioned to Alex that they would be transferred over to Continuing Care in a few days. And today the nurse tells me today’s the day. The NICU doctors, it seems, had come to find our boys boring – what with the stable heart rates and temperatures, and the too infrequent alarm bells and whistles. So they wheeled their little isolettes across to Continuing Care which is quite similar to the intensive care unit except we no longer have a view of Hadlock Field, and we have couches instead of recliners. There is a whole different vibe in CC. It’s more of a happy-go-lucky type of place, where you’re encouraged to grab and hoist your children when the mood strikes, and the nurses seem more interested in preparing you for parenthood than in hawkishly watching every monitor.

I am changing diapers and taking temps with abandon. The nurses think I’m extremely funny, since I’m generally bouncing off the walls with energy and awkwardness, and a soiled diaper in my incapable hands still threatens every time to become toxic poopcident with far-reaching implications. Nonetheless, I am improving. Alex is doing her work with calmness, productivity, and grace, making it look easy. The boys are growing, systems are go.

More tomorrow – after a long day at work.

“Toxic Poopcident” will no doubt be the name of the boys’ first band.

Three cheers for continuing care! Woo-hoo!

See if they have some sort of time-share deal for future visits. Maybe every six months, for a week, until 2020? (Once the boys are 12 you can catch a break when they’re out at soccer / cello / painting.)

Keep up all that crazy love & energy. It’s working!

soccer, cello and painting??? poor poor poor! Okay, maybe not soccer.

We’re going to send them to after school accounting classes…bring them to indemnity festivals, buy them stethoscopes.

But that said – it’s nice to hear from all y’all – especially so many old friends and even a sister!

So boring you went back to work! May you live in really boring times. Heaven, as the man creakily sang, is a place where nothing ever happens.
