Alex is whisked away

I’m in the room – Alex has been taken off to be prepped for surgery. She’ll get a spinal, and more doctors than a barrel of monkeys. Only this monkey remains, in the sunny triage room, wearing a mask and waiting to be summoned. We had a delightful and extended audience with our chief surgeon, a former artist, former Greenwich Village resident, and an absolutely delightful person. She swore like a sailor, warned us not make ourselves crazy with all the “crap” the lactation consultants will scare us with (if you don’t pump instantly your milk will dry up FOREVER). She told us about what Somali mothers do as an example of healthy practices (among other things, they drink tea). Over the course of our time together I issued many a belly laugh and Alex was radiant as they wheeled her away. Even up here, in the eye of the storm, this is an immensely peaceful and encouraging environment. I feel warm, confident, and ready.

And terrified.
